Picture being halfway through a Pilates class, focused, sweating a little, feeling good about yourself, and then a 10-week-old golden retriever waddles across your mat and sits on your foot. That's a Puppies and Pilates class. It's a real workout, and there are real puppies, and somehow it works perfectly.
If you've never heard of it before, here's everything you need to know before you show up.
How the Class Is Structured
Each session runs 75 minutes. The first 45 are a proper mat Pilates workout led by a certified instructor, not a stretch-and-sway situation. You'll move through core-focused, low-impact exercises that work for beginners while still giving Pilates regulars something to feel the next day.
Then the puppies come out.
The last 30 minutes are open interaction time, where the pups roam the mat space freely. You sit with them, hold them, and generally stop pretending you're a composed adult. The session closes with a curated mocktail moment, which is one of those details that make this feel more like an experience than a fitness class. Because it is.
What Should You Bring to Puppies and Pilates?
You don't need much.
-
Workout clothes you can move in (and don't mind getting fur on)
-
Grip socks, recommended for mat work, and available at most locations if you forget
-
A full water bottle
-
Your phone, charged, because you will absolutely be taking photos
Mats are provided. You're not hauling anything across town.
What You Should Know About The Puppies
This is usually what first-timers are most curious about, and rightfully so.
Puppies and Pilates works with carefully vetted local breeders in each city. The pups are between 7 and 12 weeks old, fully weaned, and up to date on vaccinations before they ever step into a studio. Between sessions, they get more than 30 minutes of downtime to rest, and they have continuous access to fresh water and food according to their breeder's guidance. The studio and equipment are cleaned with puppy-safe products before and between every class.
The environment is intentionally low-stress. If a pup wants to nap in the corner, that's allowed. Their comfort comes first.
One more thing worth knowing: the puppies you meet may be available for adoption, but this is not a sales event. Purchases are never discussed in class. Most are already reserved for their forever families and are simply there for early socialization during a key developmental window.
Do You Need Pilates Experience?
The classes are designed to be approachable, and the instructor will cue modifications throughout. Mat Pilates is lower impact than most group fitness formats, so if you've never done a single Pilates class before, you'll be fine. Possibly sore the next day, but fine.
If you already practice Pilates, you'll still get a solid session. The chaos of a puppy wandering toward your face mid-exercise is a feature.
The Vibe
Nobody here is racing anyone. People come with their whole friend group, come solo, come because it's someone's birthday, and this beats another wine night. The atmosphere is genuinely social, and the workout is genuinely real. Both things are true.
The spaces are beautiful on purpose. If you leave with 47 photos, that's expected.
First Timer Puppy Pilates FAQs
How much does a class cost?
Tickets are $65 per class. A 3-class pack is available for $150 if you already know you're coming back.
How many puppies will be there?
Typically, between 5 and 12, depending on litter availability and what works best for the dogs that day. Larger litters are prioritized whenever possible.
Can kids come?
Participants must be at least 12 years old. Anyone between 12 and 15 needs to be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian.
What if I have allergies?
The studio space will have dog dander in it. If you have pet allergies, check with your doctor before booking.
Can I adopt one of the puppies?
The puppies may be available from their breeders, but purchases are not discussed in class. What happens in the studio stays in the studio, serotonin-wise.
Are tickets refundable?
All tickets are final sale. These are pop-up events, so the no-refund policy holds across all locations.
Is this just puppy yoga with a different name?
Not exactly. The Pilates portion is a real, instructor-led workout with proper cueing and structure. It's not a backdrop for puppy content. It happens first, and it's 45 minutes. The puppy time follows. Both matter.
Move. Melt. Meet Some Puppies
Arrive a few minutes early. Showing up right at start time when you've never been before adds unnecessary stress to what should be a very good hour of your week.
Classes currently run in Annapolis, Washington DC, Arlington, and Rehoboth Beach, with cities like Austin, Nashville, Charlotte, and more coming soon.
The first time tends to be the one people talk about most. You leave sweaty, covered in fur, and genuinely in a better mood than when you walked in. That's the whole point. Order your ticket. Your mat (and a puppy) are waiting.
